Release notes

What's new

The latest changes, newest first. Feather also shows these notes once, the first time it starts after an update.

0.9.6

Sync between your devices without an account, real Glass transparency on Mac, a new icon, sturdier Tampermonkey and extensions

Added

  • Sync without an account: export and import your data in a file encrypted with a passphrase
  • Sync without an account: link your devices with a pairing code; your data travels encrypted through a mailbox, every five minutes
  • Sync without an account: two linked devices on the same Wi-Fi exchange their data directly
  • Mac: real Glass transparency, with the desktop blurred behind the bar (“Transparency” setting in Appearance)
  • Site info (macOS): “Identify as” an iPhone to get a site's lighter mobile version
  • Reloading a page keeps the current video's position
  • New icon: a jade feather on a dark green background

Improved

  • Top bar: a single look, Glass, as Band or Islands (Plume, Classeur and Halo removed)
  • Power saving mode: no more video previews when hovering over thumbnails
  • Passwords: “Use passwords from” can be chosen in a single click
  • Extensions: “Experimental” label in the Extensions window and in Settings

Fixed

  • Tampermonkey starts again and its scripts work on Mac (chrome.userScripts)
  • Mac: an extension's background is no longer suspended when Feather's window is hidden (Checker Plus for Gmail)
  • Mac: an extension whose background fails to start is restarted, then a notice explains it instead of an empty window (Proton Pass)

0.9.5

Smarter, lighter sleeping tabs, more complete extensions (right-click, notifications, Proton Pass), site info and shield merged, clearer downloads

Added

  • Mac: menu items that extensions add to the right-click menu now appear, and their keyboard shortcuts work
  • Mac: extension notifications go through the Mac's Notification Center, with their buttons, and clicks are passed back to the extension
  • Memory panel (Mac): how much each enabled extension weighs, with the total
  • Windows: an extension's background can open tabs (Checker Plus, Proton VPN), and its errors are logged in erreurs.txt
  • Mac: hovering over a sleeping tab quietly wakes it up, ready for your click, and a picture of the page stays on screen while it wakes
  • Mac: the back/forward history of sleeping tabs is saved to disk and restored at the next launch

Improved

  • Site info (padlock) and the shield are now a single panel with three tabs: Protections, Settings, Log
  • Downloads: icon actions, full file name, progress under the line
  • Base sidebar on Mac: ← → ↻ on the same line as the red, yellow and green buttons; centered header in Base and Rail
  • Windows, bar on the left: minimize, maximize and close stay on the left, mirrored; on Mac, the traffic lights stick to the right edge when the bar is on the right
  • In dark theme, site icons no longer have a white square, except dark ones
  • Memory: when the Mac runs low on memory, Feather first puts forgotten tabs to sleep, as many as needed; frozen tabs get low priority from the system
  • “Lighten heavy pages” only kicks in when the Mac is under pressure, never while you're using it or during a video
  • Extensions: an extension's hidden document closes when it's no longer needed, and uBlock Lite takes over from Feather's blocker sooner
  • Interface: 8 bugs and 8 refinements from the November 3 review (private window in Glass, mouse wheel on top tabs, pinned tabs as tiles…)

Fixed

  • A tab whose page is stopped by the system reloads or goes back to sleep instead of staying dead
  • YouTube Shorts: the next short plays again after a long while
  • Mac: Checker Plus for Gmail can delete a message again (“No gmail IK found”)
  • Mac: Proton Pass keeps its icons in the fields of sites that rewrite their page, and extensions that load .wasm files work
  • Payment buttons that open an empty window before filling it (CentroBill) work
  • Windows: on-device translation starts again
  • Security: a site can no longer rewrite the messages its page sends to Feather

0.9.4

Extensions closer to Chrome, lighter hidden tabs on Mac, free-form sidebar and Glass style by default; Windows also gets everything from 0.9.2 and 0.9.3

Added

  • Sidebar: a “New tab” row at the top of the tab list, like Zen
  • Free-form sidebar: ← → ↻ and Home move like the other buttons; a full area refuses one more button and tucks its last buttons into “⋯”
  • Ad tabs that a page opens on its own (on the first click on a video, for example) are blocked and closed, thanks to the “popup” rules of EasyList and Liste FR
  • Extensions on Mac: chrome.notifications shows up in Feather's window
  • Windows: everything from 0.9.2 and 0.9.3 (list of missing Chrome features, small window for an extension that opens tabs, sites answering 403 or 404 shown as they are…)

Improved

  • Glass style (address above the page) for a new Feather; your current settings don't change
  • Mac: a tab hidden for 30 seconds gives back its display memory, about 25 MB per tab (except sound, video, form in progress, pinned tab…)
  • Extensions on Mac: allowed sites are allowed in full, as in Chrome, not just their home page (Checker Plus for Gmail)

Fixed

  • The first click on an inactive Feather window counts, and a panel or preview open over the page no longer eats nearby clicks (Mac)
  • A button clicked while the interface is updating no longer loses the click
  • Mac: Proton VPN no longer closes tabs at launch (Feather reported an install at every start)
  • Mac: the Checker Plus for Gmail window has its real size, not half of it on a Retina screen
  • Mac: extension pages reopened at launch (Checker Plus options…) no longer stay blank

Notes for older versions are available in French.
